Where to add SEO information on your website

Add SEO data in the places listed below to have the best chances of being found by visitors.

On all (sub)pages

In the Page Settings menu on all your pages, make sure to fill in the three dedicated SEO fields: Page Title, Page Keywords, and Page Description.

You can access the Page Settings by navigating to "Pages" on the left → hover your mouse over the respective page → Settings → "Content" → "SEO".

Keep your page description to a maximum of 160 characters, as many search engines truncate longer texts.

Further down, you will see a preview of how the information will be displayed in the search engine.

In text sections

Pay attention to the use of correct taxonomies (e.g., H1, H2, H3...). Ensure that you use an H1 tag for the most important heading on each of your pages. The hierarchy of headings (H1 as the main heading, H2 as a subheading, etc.) structures the content and thereby categorizes it.

You add an H1 tag using the Text Editor. Text Module → Double-click → Select → confirm with green checkmark.

"P" stands for Paragraph, meaning anything that is not a heading.

Attention: There should be exactly one H1 heading on each subpage. No more and no less. And its words should describe the content of the subpage.

For images

Image Alt-Texts (alternative text) should be added to all images included on your website to help search engines and assistive technologies "read" them better. You can add Alt-Texts via the following modules and functions: Image Module, Image List Module, Gallery Module.

There are different ways to add Alt-Texts to images in the Designer, depending on where they are used on your website. You can find more information here.

More Tips & Tricks

To further improve the SEO of your ChurchDesk website beyond the points already mentioned, there are a number of additional measures you can take. These help search engines better understand your content and classify your page as relevant for search queries.

  • Regular Updates: Publish new, fresh, and relevant content regularly. Search engines prefer websites that are actively maintained.
  • Thoroughness and Depth: Create comprehensive content that provides added value to your readers.
  • Mobile Device Display: Ensure that your website is optimally displayed and easy to use on all devices – especially smartphones and tablets. Google uses the mobile version of your website as the primary basis for indexing and ranking (Mobile-First-Indexing). We explain how to adapt your content for different devices here.
  • Internal Linking/Linkbuilding: Link relevant content within your own ChurchDesk website. This helps search engines understand the structure of your site and keeps visitors on your site longer.
  • External Links: Redirects via external links, e.g., to and from your neighboring/partner congregations and, for example, your deanery, show search engines that visitors are interested in your website.
  • Clear Navigation (User Experience UX): Ensure intuitive and easy-to-understand navigation on your website. Users who can find their way around easily stay longer and visit more pages. If users quickly return to the search results, this can be a negative signal for search engines. Good UX helps reduce the bounce rate.
  • Local Keywords: Integrate location-based keywords into your content (e.g., "service in [Your City]", "parish [Your Location]"). Consider what users are looking for when they come to your site. Provide answers to their questions and solutions to their problems.
  • Google My Business: Optimize your Google My Business listing with up-to-date information, photos, and posts. This is particularly important for local searches for your church.

Checking for Missing SEO Information (Studio Add-On Only)

With the Designer's integrated SEO Checker, you can quickly get an overview of the SEO-related fields you have filled in across your entire website. The program lists the exact places on your website where SEO data is missing to help you troubleshoot. The orange exclamation mark indicates the subpages to be revised.

The tool is divided into two areas:

  1. SEO Checker: Here you will find notes on all content inserted on the website where SEO data is missing. These are listings by subpage, so you can subsequently update the content on the respective subpages.
  2. SEO Page Settings: Here you will find the SEO settings for all subpages centrally in one place. This makes editing easier, as you don't have to select each page setting individually to fill in the information. The changes you make will then also be reflected in the respective page settings.
